![]() ![]() The fact that they are noiseless is a big plus to me. ![]() The name samarium is after the mineral samarskite from which it was isolated. I also think the SCNs sound at least as good as current standard pickups for American Standard Strats. Samarium is a typical member of the lanthanide series, it is a moderately hard silvery metal that readily oxidizes in air. The SCNs sound just a little more traditional to my ears.Ĭompared to the Fender pickups that came stock in American Standard Strats in the 1980s, the SCNs sound much better to me i.e., more dynamic, clear, quacky, and chimey, and with a broader frequency range. The Kinmans sound just a little warmer and fuller. They sound similar to the Kinman Avn Blues pickups, which are another nice noiseless set. In short, they do a fairly good job of capturing the good aspects of traditional single coil pickups. They are well suited for technical applications where high-performance and magnetic strength is required in very high or low temperature environments. They also let the lower strings ring loud and clear like a piano. Samarium Cobalt (SmCo) magnets have excellent temperature stability while maintaining their magnetic properties in extreme temperature conditions. They have a nice, warm single coil sound with a fair amount of chime and quack. They are very sensitive to pickup height, and to me they sound best when they are fairly close to the strings. SmCo magnets are similar in strength to neodymium magnets but have higher temperature ratings and higher coercivity. The SCNs produce a fairly strong signal and don't seem to exert much magnetic pull on the strings. Samarium Cobalt Powder is used in magnets. I have another American Standard Strat with Kinman Avn Blues pickups. The samarium-cobalt magnets are quite resistant to demagnetizing magnetic fields and do not need to be protected against corrosion. I have them in a 2001 American Standard Strat which previously had an old set of American Standard pickups from the 1980s. ![]()
